Chin
Augmentation (shaping/implants)
A balanced bone structure is the framework for ideal beauty. Facial
implants are typically used to create the desired balance to the
existing features of the face. It is also used to correct asymmetries
and congenital defects. The most frequent types of implant procedures
are performed in the cheek and chin area. A chin implant may enhance
the overall contour of your face. The use of synthetic implants
or reshaping is a safe and effective means of augmenting various
regions of the face to achieve a more youthful and attractive appearance.
The implants are made out of both solid and semi-solid materials
that have been used successfully for years. Chin augmentation is
often performed in conjunction with other procedures, such as a
rhinoplasty, facelift or cheek augmentation to improve the overall
balance between the chin and other facial features.
How
is chin augmentation performed?
Chin
shaping can be performed with the implant inserted either through
a tiny incision underneath the chin, or through an incision inside
the lower lip. Your surgeon will explain prior to your surgery which
incision will be better for you. After the incision is made, a small
pocket will be created beneath the skin, fatty tissue and muscle
to hold the implant securely against the jaw. If your incision is
made inside the lower lip, it is closed with dissolving sutures
(stitches) that do not need removal. There will be no visible scar.
If your incision is underneath your chin, regular sutures (stitches)
will be used and are generally removed within one week, leaving
a barely noticeable scar. Usually, the chin is taped after surgery
to minimize swelling and discomfort.

How
do I prepare for chin augmentation?
During
your initial consultation, your surgeon will discuss the changes
that you would like to make to your appearance. Since the appearance
of your chin is a matter of personal perception and preference,
you will need to discuss your concerns in detail so your surgeon
can determine the appropriate alternatives. Your surgeon will evaluate
and assess the position of your chin to determine facial symmetry
and balance. Your surgeon may also point out other problems areas.
For example, most people who consider chin augmentation may also
be a candidate for rhinoplasty, or cheek augmentation, in order
to create a more harmonious appearance. You also should make arrangements
ahead of time for someone to drive you to and from your procedure
and to assist you with your daily activities during your recovery
period.
Prior
to your surgical procedure, the surgeon will perform a complete
health history and physical. Knowledge of your allergies, medications
and previous surgeries should be brought to your surgeon's attention
at this time. Smoking cessation is advised for at least three week
prior to and two weeks after your surgery. Smoking inhibits blood
flow to your skin and may delay the healing process of your incision
areas. Specific instructions to assist you in preparing for this
procedure will be given to you after the health history and physical
is complete. Depending on your individual health status, the instructions
may include guidelines regarding your diet, alcohol intake, smoking
and which medications to take or avoid. Your experience will be
much smoother if you remain compliant with your surgeon's instructions.

What
are the possible complications after chin augmentation?
As
with any surgical procedure, small sensory nerves near the surface
of the skin may be interrupted and consequently, you may feel some
numbness or have less than full feeling. Sensibility returns over
several months, but some diminished feelings may last indefinitely.
Facial nerve injury with weakness of a part of the face can occur
on a transient or permanent basis, however is very rare. Other complications
not listed here, can occur but are exceedingly rare. The shifting
or imprecise of positioning of an implant, or an infection around
it, could require a second operation or removal of the implant.
Rarely, excess tightening and hardening of scar tissue around an
implant can cause an unnatural shape. It is always important to
be informed about the possible complications before any surgery.
Be sure to discuss any concerns you may have with your surgeon.

What
results can I expect after chin augmentation?
Upon
awakening from the anesthesia, you may experience some pain that
will be relieved with medication. If you experience continued discomfort,
you will be given additional pain medication. During the healing
phase, particularly during the first three to seven days, your activities
and diet will be restricted. Your ability to smile and talk will
be limited at first. Give your face an opportunity to heal and you
will be rewarded in time. You may not be able to accurately evaluate
your newly shaped chin for several weeks or months. Give yourself
the opportunity to get used to your new look. Surprisingly, others
may not even recognize that you have had a procedure; they just
think you look better, more refreshed. Be sure to address any questions
or concerns about this procedure to your surgeon immediately.
